About Designers in Residence
Designers in Residence tracks the journey of a group of emerging designers as they develop individual projects from initial concept to final installation. Following the exploration and refinement of original forms, techniques and materials, the selected designers then test their ideas and challenge existing interfaces and conventions.
The Designers
The brief calls on the designers to engage with the work and activity of the Design Museum, creating site-specific installations and offering visitors and followers of the museum an insight into the design and thought processes of the next generation of designers. This year’s designers are creating interventions that that stimulate, considering the notion of community and principles of engagement.
The selected designers all demonstrate a creative and experimental approach from different disciplines, embracing many activities from diverse points of reference within contemporary design culture. As part of the residency new work is commissioned and through this the designers reveal the design process and the creative rationale, showing that every decision shapes the final result, disclosing a distinctive expression of values, which forms part of the journey of the designer.
The Residency
In its third year, Designers in Residence reinforces one of the core objectives of the Design Museum to nurture young design talent through providing a platform to showcase and promote their work and ideas. Through this the museum creates a dynamic relationship, supporting the designers as they embark on their career.
The designers will feature in the museum at different times over an extended period, allowing them more flexibility, simultaneously presenting them all at different stages of the design process. Out of the five installations some designers are focused on reviewing current themes and areas of pursuit that are relevant to their practice, whilst others are encouraging vigorous discussion and exchange of ideas in order to enrich their work.
In part 1, which runs from the 18th September to the 31st October 2009, we welcome Dave Bowker and Marc Owens.
